My Nightmare Photography Client: $400 Chargeback, Misogyny Accusation, and Pure Disrespect

by Cole

As a real estate photographer with nearly a decade of experience, I’ve worked with all types of clients — luxury agents, interior designers, first-timers, and everything in between. Most are professional, respectful, and great to work with.

But this one?
This was the worst client I’ve ever had. And it taught me a lesson I’ll never forget.

🚨 What Went Down

I was booked for a pretty standard shoot:

  • Interior & exterior real estate photography
  • Drone photos
  • Floor plan
  • 24-hour delivery

I delivered everything on time.
But by Monday morning, I get a call. And it wasn’t your average “Hey, we need one edit” kind of call.

This guy tells me my work is lazy, rushed, and unprofessional.

Then he asks for a refund, and when he doesn’t get it… he files a $400 chargeback on a $600 invoice.
No warning. No discussion. Just disrespect.

🧠 What Actually Happened

Let me back up.

The house wasn’t staged. The wife showed up late, completely unprepared, asking to stage room by room while I was shooting. That alone turned a 30-minute job into a 90-minute one. I had to reschedule my next shoot.

I stayed calm. I delivered the photos the next day.

Their feedback?

  • “The sky looks washed out.”
  • “You missed architectural features.”
  • “Weeds in the photo.”
  • “You didn’t include every shot you took.”
  • “Where are the drone shot labels?”

The list went on.

Despite my professional response and multiple revisions, the client kept escalating.
Eventually, I laid it all out in a detailed, respectful email and fired them as a client.

💥 The Chargeback

A few days later, I find out they filed a $400 chargeback with their bank.
Despite me delivering everything they paid for — and more.
I had to compile emails, proof of delivery, screenshots, timelines, the whole nine yards… and wait for a decision.

(TLDR: Still pending. I’ll update when I hear back.)

🧰 What I Did Next (So You Don’t Have To Learn the Hard Way)

After all this, I finally created something I should’ve had years ago:

✅ A real Terms & Conditions Template

→ This outlines my expectations, deliverables, editing policy, and boundaries before anyone books me.

If you’re a real estate photographer or creative freelancer, this experience is a reminder:

You don’t just need talent.
You need systems.
Boundaries.
Documentation.
And the confidence to walk away when someone disrespects your work.

💬 Final Thoughts

Dealing with nightmare clients is never fun — but it can make you stronger, more professional, and more prepared.

This guy thought he could bully me into a refund, discredit my work, and still keep the photos.
Not happening.
